Roos Split Spring Tour Finale; Sports Suspended

FORT MYERS, FL Chris McVannan went 3-for-4 to lead the baseball team to a split v. United States Merchant Marine Academy as the Roos closed out their spring break trip in Florida on Saturday. Canton won the opener 13-6 before falling 14-1 in the nightcap.

HOW IT HAPPENED

GAME 1 –

The Roo bats came out swinging early as they tallied seven runs on six hits in the opening inning. Cameron Cartier scored McVannan on an RBI single to left. Don Louis Rodriguez followed with an RBI single to center to bring home Cartier.

Dyllon Bougor kept the scoring going with a base hit to second to plate Rodriguez. Juan Diaz then scored on a wild pitch and McVannan brought home Nicholas Brito on a single up the middle.Merchant Marine got on the board with one run in the bottom half of the inning. Canton responded with two runs in the second as Zach Miner scored on a wild pitch and Nathan Welch brought in Cartier on a sac fly to right.

Canton added one run each in the third and fourth innings, while the Mariners plated three in the third and two in the fifth. Brito scored on a wild pitch in the third and Rodriguez doubled home Welch in the fourth.

The Roos added two insurance runs in the seventh on a 2 RBI double up the middle by Jack Brill to score Bougor and McVannan.Luis Torres-Rivera was credited with the no-decision tossing three innings giving up four earned runs with a strike out and two walks. Danny Vargas earned the win as the more effective reliever as he did not give up a single run on two hits in two innings.

Zach Bates also threw in relief surrendering two earned runs. Ben Kane took the loss for the Mariners giving up nine earned runs on four walks and one strike out in one inning.

GAME 2

The Mariners bats were up to the task in the nightcap as they scored five runs in the third and six in the fourth to break open an 11-1 lead after four innings.Canton got on the board in the third inning when Zach Bates scored Jesus Garcia on a ground out. Merchant Marine added one run in the fifth and two in the sixth for the 14-1 final.Ty Reed took the loss giving up five earned runs on five hits over 1.1 innings. Kole Register picked up the win for the Mariners tossing six innings giving up four hits and one earned run with eight strike outs.

WHAT'S NEXT This concludes the Roos spring break trip to Florida. In light of the worldwide situation regarding the COVID-19 virus outbreak, SUNY Canton will be suspending all athletic competitions indefinitely.
