Ross Sweep Debut Under Coach Thayer

FORT MYERS FL The SUNY Canton softball team opened its first season under Head Coach Lindsey Thayer with a pair of wins v. Alfred State and Martin Luther College in Fort Myers on Sunday afternoon.

The Roos defeated the Pioneers 11-3 in five innings before earning an 8-6 win v. the Knights.

The Roos scored two runs each in the second, third and fourth innings in the opener before blowing the game open and earning a run-rule win with a five spot in the fifth.Jordan Knapp led the Canton bats going 3-for-4 with two doubles and 5 RBI. Kayla Chavarri finished with a double and drove in a pair of runs.Sophia Padilla-Gundersen finished with a hit and an RBI, while Sophia Harris, Mackenzie Currie and Selena Tasli all had multi-hit outings.Alaina Beane earned the win on the mound tossing four innings giving up four hits and two earned runs with four strike outs.Audrey Farrell took the loss for the Pioneers giving up 13 hits and nine earned runs with three strike outs.


The Roos jumped out to a 7-0 lead after its at-bats in the top of the third but Martin Luther battled back with three runs each in the third and fourth innings to get within one. Canton plated an insurance run in the seventh and Chavarri shut the door for the save over the final three innings.Alexis Fagnant earned her first collegiate win allowing five earned runs with two strike outs in four innings. Chavarri tossed three innings in relief as she didn’t give up a single run on three hits with one fanned batter.Fagnant was stellar helping her own cause going 2-for-2 with a three-run homer and an RBI double and also reached base on a walk.Callee Zulauf and Angelina LoPiccolo both produced a pair of hits each with LoPiccolo driving in a run. Nicole Ferch also finished with 1 RBI.Morgan Palubicki took the loss for the Knights giving up three earned runs with two strike outs.

WHAT'S NEXT The Roos return to the diamond on Monday when they take on Oneonta and Nazareth at 9 and 11 a.m., respectively.


Fort Myers, FL – Dyllon Bougor and Zach Miner recorded two hits each and Bougor, Gokul Pisharody and Mackenzie Mather finished with 2 RBI each as the baseball team dropped a doubleheader by scores of 23-2 and 12-8 to Skidmore College on Sunday.

GAME 1 –

The Skidmore bats erupted for 10 runs in the first inning, six in the fourth and four in the seventh inning on their way to a convincing 23-2 win in the opener. The Roos scored two runs in the sixth inning to break up the shutout. Nick Brito scored on a wild pitch and Pisharody singled down the right field line to plate Jack Brill. Both runs came with two outs and were unearned.

Jay Gamboa earned the win for the Thoroughbreds tossing six innings without giving up an earned run with seven strike outs. Shane Tiernan took the loss for the Roos giving up nine runs on four hits with four walks .Justin LaRose led Skidmore going 3-for-4 with five runs and 5 RBI.

GAME 2 –

The Thoroughbreds got out to a 9-0 lead after four innings in the nightcap and led 12-1 heading to the sixth.Canton battled back scoring one run in the sixth and six more in the seventh. Chris McVannan plated Seth Gilbert on an RBI single to left in the fifth. Mackenzie Mather doubled home Zach Miner in the sixth. Pisharody reached on an error in the seventh but the runners were going on contact resulting in the RBI as Juan Diaz scored. Mather drew a walk plating Dawon Kerr. Cameron Cartier followed with an RBI single bringing home Miner.

Zach Bates continued the scoring when he dropped a base hit into right field as Pisharody came home. Bougor concluded the scoring with a 2 RBI double to left to score Mather and Cartier. Spencer Meyer earned the win for Skidmore giving up one earned run on five hits with three strike outs in 5.2 innings. Tim Allen picked up the save tossing two-thirds of an inning.Collin Trathen took the loss allowing nine runs with a strike out and six walks in four innings.
