Seaway Smash Teams Excel At Winter Challenge

Seaway Smash Volleyball Club’s four teams participated in the annual Winter Challenge this past Saturday, January 4th. It’s the 4th year out of the past 5 that the club has made the trek to Pembroke, Ontario to participate in the event, hosted by the Ottawa Valley Vikings Volleyball Club. This year the event grew to include an additional club team from neighboring Cornwall Vikings Volleyball Club.

The event was a competitive and friendly event that gives teams time to prepare for upcoming tournaments and work off holiday break rust. “This was a fantastic event with a great competition on the court, and off the court a lot of new friends were made. We’re looking forward to seeing these teams again in future Ontario events”, said Coach Scott Wilhelm.

Seaway Smash’s 18U team, Subzero, took 2nd place against the Ottawa Valley Vikings 18U and 17U home teams. The team consists of Abigail Benham (Massena), Delany Durant (Massena), Hannah Hughes (Potsdam), Sierah LaValley (Tupper Lake), Sydney Lorenc (Canton), Ysabella Miller (Massena), Olivia Morrell (Massena), Kania Swamp (Salmon River) and Anna Thompson (Massena). Subzero is coached by Cashlynn Colbert and Bill Jaggers.

Seaway Smash’s 16U team, Vortex, also took 2nd place against both the Ottawa Valley Vikings 16U teams, as well as Seaway Smash’s other 16U team, Storm.

The team is comprised of Katie Bennett (Canton), Hayleigh Conlon (Tupper Lake), Claire Durant (Brushton-Moira), Olivia Ellis (Tupper Lake), Mya Gerstenberger (Tupper Lake), Ava Hoy (Canton), Julia Kelso (OFA), Mallory Morley (OFA), Olivia Russell (Potsdam), and London Tyo (Tupper Lake). Vortex is coached by Scott and Abigail Wilhelm.

Seaway Smash Storm took 4th place in the 16U division. On their team are Katelyn Benham (Massena), Sydney Cardinal (Massena), Felicity Engstrom (Massena), Mackenzie Lane (Malone), Juliana Miller (Massena), Olivia Miller (Massena), Quoya Rourke-Square (Massena), Gabrielle Thomas (Massena), Victoria Titus (Chateaugay) and Halle Varney (Potsdam). Storm is coached by Keith Benham and Julie Cardinal.

Seaway Smash Blizzard, the clubs 15U team, also took 4th place in their first event outside of Section X, and country, for all the team members. On the team are Cathleen Bell (Massena), Cecelia Cree (Salmon River), Kiersten Gardner (Parishville-Hopkinton/Potsdam), Ava Hudson (Malone), Shelby Jock (Salmon River), Savannah King (Malone), Ava Mitchell (Salmon River), Clare Sullivan-Catlin (Potsdam), Kaia Swamp (Salmon River), and Joely Swamp (Salmon River). The team is coached by Alissa Stebbins and Ticia Yerdon.

Some upcoming events for Seaway Smash include Subzero returning to Pembroke for their 2nd Ontario Volleyball Association (OVA) event for the season on January 18th; Vortex and Storm will be going to Ottawa University on January 25th for their 1st OVA event this season; and Blizzard will make their way back to Canada for their 1st OVA event, on February 1st.

All four teams will then make their way to the IREVA Icicle Challenge 3-Day convention center style tournament in Syracuse February 15th-17th at the OnCenter.
