Second Period Surge Lifts OFA, N-N Shades Canton


Power play goals by Keeghan Sias and Karson LaRose triggered a four-goal second period as the OFA Hockey team reeled off its fifth sixth straight win with a 5-0 win over Albany Academy at the Edgar Newell Memorial Golden Dome on Saturday.

Kelson Hooper stopped 22 shots for the shutout and Drew Costello scored two goals as the Blue Devils (8-4-1) shook aside a first period lull manifested in Albany Academy, which lost to Massena 5-2 on Friday, gaining an 8-4 edge in shots on goal in the opening period.

"We started strong for the first five minutes of the game. We scored one and then went into a lull. We had a very good second period and the kids realize that they need to move forward after each game, lace it up and compete each day," said OFA Coach Jon Frederick.

"This is a great group of kids and it is nice to see them score to support their goaltender. We have a big league home game on Wednesday with Malone.

Costello opened the scoring at 5:39 of the first period unassisted and Keeghan Sias and Karson LaRose scored power play goals at 0:19 and 2:52 of the second period. Sias deflected a slap shot by Stephen Morley past Cadet goalie Jackson Bissell on a sequence which started with a backpass by Holden Woods.

LaRose netted an unassisted goal at the end of solo rush where he turned the corner on the defense. Costello and Morley closed out the scoring at 10:05 and 10:32 of the second period. Costello scored from Nolan O'Donnell and Morley scored unassisted.

Bissello and Emma McIntyre finished with 26 saves for Albany Academy.

AWARDS: Kelson Hooper who gained his fourth shutout in the last 10 games and entered the game with a Section 10 best 1.56 goals against average was honored as 1400 AM ESPN Athlete of the Week...Karson LaRose who leads the team in scoring with 11 goals and three assists was recognized as the Victory Promotions North Country Athlete of the Week.


CANTON - Three Madrid-Waddington athletes produced the game-winning goal as Norwood-Norfolk edged Canton 3-2 in an NAC Interdivisional game on Saturday at the Canton. John McCall scored from Brody VanBuren and Matt Greene to break a 2-2 tie at 18:18 of the second period. Another M-W student-athlete, goaltender Thomas Cafarella stopped 17 shots and blanked Canton over the second and third period.

Bobby Voss scored the first N-N (6-3-0 NAC, 8-3-1) marker from Riley Ashley and Ashley scored the second goal from Reed Gravlin. Rhett Palmer set up Trey Bessette for the first Canton (3-2-0, 3-10-0) goal and scored the second from Kadan Baxter.

In other NAC action St. Lawrence Central dropped a 6-4 loss to Northeastern Clinton at the Malone Tournament.
