Section 10 Awaits NYSPHSAA Decision On Spring Sports
BY DAVE SHEA
New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo issued some very optimistic information to citizens of the state in his daily update on the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
"Controlling the spread, the worst is over ... if we continue to be smart going forward," he said. Cuomo who also announced he and the governors of adjoining state has begun talking about plans to opening their states. But he emphasized that the social distancing, self isolation and shutdown practices must be strictly continued to continue the progress.
The Cuomo's update will undoubtedly offer hope to citizens all over the state, homebound students hopeful of returning to school sometime this spring and student/athletes holding firm to their hopes of having spring sports season.
When asked this morning, Section 10 Athletic Coordinator Carl Normandin said that the section will follow the directives of the CDC, Department of Health and of Governor Cuomo and that schools will be closed until April 29.
Normandin related that the New York State Public High School Association will be making a decision on the status of its Spring Sports Championships on April 27. After that decision has been made, this will allow Normandin and his office and the Section 10 Athletic Council an opportunity to finalize a safe, fair and appropriate/abbreviated schedule if applicable.
The Northern Athletic Conference/Section X schools will remain in a shutdown due to the spread of coronavirus; all athletic teams have put their seasons on hold at the direction of the Governor’s mandate of a “Stay at Home Directive”, which includes the closures of all school in New York State through April 29, 2020.
Per these directives, it is in the best interest of our student-athletes to continue the suspension extracurricular activities (athletic related) until further notice.
Our office will continue to communicate with our component districts as things develop. We will continue to follow/support the CDC, the Dept. of Health and the Governors directives as they are issued to our School communities. The New York State Public High School Athletic Association will be making a decision on the status of our Spring Sport Championships on April 27, 2020.
Schedules will then be dictated based on the “actual” date of return to school, and whether or not there will be any NYSPHSAA Spring Championship events. Specific details on Spring Sport schedules and Spring Sport Championships will be made later this month as the status of this crisis unfolds and when and if ,it is determined that we can all return to our schools.
