Section 10 Snipers Leave Legacy Of Big Shots
BY DAVE SHEA
Longtime OFA JV and Varsity Coach Scott Sargent Offers Input on Section 10 Hoops Clutch Shots.
I agree with Andy Bardeschewski 100% - but I feel that both he and Freddy need to be mentioned as well. All three hit HUGE shots in that last minute of that Section 10 Championship Win Over Gouverneur. The Kenyon girl’s shot in the state final for Hammond was as clutch as they get. Mike Donnelly hit a game-tying 3 with 3 seconds left to send our (Heuvelton's) 2004 sectional semi-final game against Massena into OT, then Casey Bill hit two FT’s with seconds left to tie the game again, sending it to double OT at Maxcy. We eventually won 77-71 in double OT. Often times, great teams and players are denied the chance to hit clutch shots, through no fault of their own, simply because they are rarely in any close games (i.e. Kinnon LaRose). Note: LaRose did have perhaps the most visually impactful shot in Section 10 history with his flying putback breath-taking dunk in regional action at Hudson Valley.
MORE BIG SHOTS IN BLUE DEVIL HISTORY
Conversing with Coach Sargent brings other great OFA highlights. Strictly considering OFA hoops, some big ones that come to mind are Mike Martin’s buzzer beater at home against Potsdam and Coach Kmack, Terry Vernsey in the state playoffs in a win over SUNY Plattsburgh at Maxcy Hall, Mike Baker against Watervliet, I believe, in the regionals, Travis LaRock with a big 3 and Saranac and a game-winner against Schyulerville before a massive crowd at Saratoga High School in other regional action. Some overall performances that were clutch despite losses were Kinnon LaRose (one of 8 3s) against Watervliet and Cale Sargent's against Hudson, both in the regional finals. Jackson Jones’ tip/steal/finish at home at the buzzer against Canton was epic (absolutely along with 37 point effort against state champion Glens Falls). Maybe the loudest I have ever heard the OFA gymnasium. As far as a season, Trent Sargent as a sophomore hit go ahead or tying 3’s late in the fourth quarter or overtime against Moriah, Malone, Canton, Massena, NAC, and Carthage, all of which resulted in narrow wins against tough opponents as part of a 23-2 season.
Devil snipers have countless moments over the years including a school record barrage of 11 3-pointers by Breton LaRose.
Another recent vintage was Brennan Harmer's buzzer beater give Madrid-Waddington a win over Norwood-Norfolk this season.
