Skating Roos Roll; Double-Doubles Lead Hoop Sweep

Fredonia, NY – Four different players scored goals, Austin Washkurak made 31 saves and Connor Tuttle posted a game-best +3 on-ice rating as the SUNY Canton men’s hockey team extended its unbeaten streak to eight games with a 4-3 road win at Fredonia on Friday evening. 

The Roos, who received 30 votes in this week’s USCHO Top 15 Poll, are 7-0-1 in their last eight games. THE BASICS

The hosts got off to an early 1-0 lead cashing in 27 seconds into a power play chance when Charlie Manley scored his eighth goal o the season.The Roos wasted no time responding as 34 seconds later Noah Robinson put home his fourth goal of the season. Adam Petric and Bailey Conklin were credited with assists on the play.Just less than two minutes later Jake Mayette gave the Roos their first lead of the contest when he lit the lamp off Kyler Matthews team-leading 13th assist of the season. Entering today Matthews ranked tied for 27th in the country in assists per game (0.92).Victor Tracy tied the game at two apiece at 18:03 of the first period as the teams were tied at two after 20 minutes.Jesse Farabee buried his team-leading 12th goal of the season at 4:38 of the second period on the power play. The score is his eighth on the power play this season. Entering today the junior ranked tied for seventh in the nation in goals per game (0.85) and second in power play goals (7).One minute and 15 seconds later Canton extended the lead to two on what proved to be an important insurance goal. Brendan McCormack finished off his fourth goal of the season with Tuttle picking up his first assist of the year. Tuttle led all players with a +3 on-ice rating on the evening.The Blue Devils got one back at 15:58 of the second period on Tommy Martyn’s first of the year.Canton killed off three penalties in the third period and their penalty kill was 6-for-7 overall. The Roos went 1-for-5 on the power play.Washkurak had a strong outing between the pipes making 31 saves including stopping all 10 shots he faced in the third period to preserve the win. He improves to 5-1-0 on the season in net.Dalton Jerzak allowed all four goals over the first 25:53 in the loss, while Ryan Pascarella made six saves over the final 32:27 in relief.

Canton, NY – Joseph Werner posted career-highs of 25 points and 21 rebounds to carry the SUNY Canton men’s basketball team to a 77-75 double overtime victory v. Maine Presque Isle in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) play on Friday evening. The 21 rebounds are the most since Romario Fletcher hauled down 24 rebounds in a 101-67 win v. the College of St. Joseph on January 8, 2017. THE BASICS

Werner paced all players with 25 points and 21 rebounds and ripped down 11 offensive rebounds. He shot 12-for-19 from the field and had six points in the two overtimes. Quran DuBois struck for 21 points to go with six rebounds and 11 of his 21 came after the end or regulation.Juztin Chambers-Phillips chipped in seven points making the start and Andrew Fitch added six points, eight rebounds and four blocks. Ibu Smith came off the bench to add five points and eight rebounds in 11 minutes of action.The Roos led 23-16 with just over five minutes left in the first half, but a 7-0 run for Maine Presque Isle tied the game at 23 apiece. The teams would head into intermission knotted at 27.UMPI led by as many as six in the second half but the Roos held a 59-54 advantage with 1:31 to play in regulation. Shyquinn Dix hit a jumper with 1:31 left and Griffin Guerrette hit was proved to be the game-tying three-pointer with 57 seconds to play.The Roos missed a pair of shots in the final minutes and George Nehma blocked a Dix jumper with time winding down as the teams headed to OT.Neither team led by more than two in the first overtime as Werner hit a jumper with nine seconds to play to tie it at 67 and Chambers-Phillips blocked a Deandre Duncombe three with two seconds left.Canton jumped out to a five point lead (74-69) midway through the second extra session after a DuBois jumped. The Owls responded with a 5-0 run but the Roos answered with the next three points to lead 77-74 after a pair of DuBois free throws with seven seconds left.Up three the Roos fouled and with four ticks left Guerrette made the first free throw and intentionally missed the second with Werner grabbing the defensive board. He missed a pair of free throws and a late desperation shot to win it for the Owls was off the mark.Guerrette and Duncombe paced the visitors with 19 points each, while Guerrette added 12 rebounds for a double-double. TeVon Hines chipped in a double-double of his own with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Canton, NY – Joie Culkin scored 19 points and added a career-high 24 rebounds to lead the SUNY Canton women’s basketball team to a 52-39 win v. Maine Presque Isle on Friday evening in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) contest.

The 24 rebounds by Culkin are the most for a single game since the Roos became full NCAA D-III members and ties her with Kaitlin Myers who also pulled down 24 rebounds in a 55-48 win v. Maine Fort Kent on February 16, 2013.

Culkin led all players in points and rebounds while also posting a game-best three blocks. She shot 7-for-14 from the field and 2-for-3 from three-point range. Autumn Watkins chipped in 12 points, six rebounds, two steals and two assists. Jeanna Manning added eight points, five rebounds and a pair of assists.The Roos shot 43 percent from the field in the opening quarter to take a 14-11 lead after 10 minutes.Canton dominated defensively in the second quarter holding the Owls to just three points while scoring 16 to take a commanding 30-14 lead into intermission. Culkin recorded a first-half double-double on 13 points and 10 rebounds.UMPI cut the lead to eight with 3:33 to play in the third quarter but would never get closer than that the remainder of the way.Mariah Dunbar paced the Owls with 12 points and eight rebounds, while Sarah Musselman added 11 in the scoring column and Taylor Miller posted 10 rebounds.The Roos outscored Maine Presque Isle 20-14 in the paint and 13-6 in second chance points.
