SLU Ladies Gain Weekend Hoops Sweep
Sophomore guard Ava McCann nearly matched her season high, shooting 5-for-9 from the arc, to lead the St. Lawrence University women's basketball team with 18 points en route to a 64-53 win over Skidmore in Liberty League action on Saturday afternoon in Burkman Gymnasium. Frederick also netted double digits posting 15 points, while she and McCann each totaled six rebounds for the Saints. Frederick added a steal and two blocks, while Olivia Barringer finished with eight rebounds and seven points and Dylan Watkiss added eight points. After an early back-and-forth battle the Saints pulled ahead 13-9 on a 3-pointer from McCann to end the first quarter. The Saints opened the second quarter with an 11-2 run to take a 24-13 lead over the Thoroughbreds and continued to maintain their double-digit spread over Skidmore with a 37-26 halftime advantage. Skidmore managed to bring the game back within single digits with 2:45 to play in the third, but were not able to come any closer for the remainder of the game. "Skidmore was very well prepared for us today and presented problems in our defenses," said head coach Dan Roiger. "They have some excellent players and we had to work hard for today's win. I was worried about a letdown after yesterday's big win, but I thought we had good energy and focus on the second game of the weekend. We continue to grow and mature with every game and I'm proud of the effort the players exhibited today. One day off, and back to work on Monday for two tough games next weekend." Clare Driscoll led the Thoroughbreds, shooting 8-for-14 from the floor, with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Kate McCarney added 12 points, while Maddie Hastings finished with seven rebounds and four steals. The Saints totaled 10 second-chance points and 13 points off the bench and shot a combined 42.0 percent from the floor and 44.4 percent from 3-point range, while Skidmore combined to shoot 38.6 percent from the floor and 14.3 percent from the arc. St. Lawrence swept the weekend and improved to 9-5 on the season and 5-2 in league play, while the Thoroughbreds fell to 2-12 and 0-7. The Saints will host RIT and William Smith on January 24 and 25, respectively. Game times are set for 5:30 p.m. on Friday and 2 p.m. on Saturday.
