SLU, ORDA Will Host 2023 NCAA Ski Championships

The NCAA announced that St. Lawrence, in conjunction with the Olympic Regional Development Authority (ORDA), will host the 2023 NCAA Skiing Championships at Whiteface Mountain and Mt. Van Hoevenberg in Lake Placid, New York, home of the 1980 Winter Olympic Games.

This will mark the third time that St. Lawrence has hosted the NCAA Skiing Championships; the Saints last hosted the event in 2015, and also served as host for the 1983 championships.

"We're proud and honored to be the site host for the 2023 NCAA Skiing Championships," said Senior Associate Vice President for Athletics Bob Durocher. "It is a great opportunity to showcase a high level of skiing, as well as the outstanding facilities that Lake Placid has to offer. It's also an extraordinary opportunity for all the student-athletes that will come to compete from across the country."

"We are looking forward to hosting the 2023 NCAA Skiing Championships in Lake Placid at Whiteface and Mt. Van Hoevenberg," said Saints' Alpine ski coach Willi Steinrotter. "We had a very successful time hosting the 2015 NCAA Championships and we're looking to provide an even better experience this time around."

"We're very excited to host the 2023 Championships," said Saints' Nordic ski coach Ethan Townsend '98, M '01. "Mt. Van Hoevenberg has recently undergone a major renovation, including a new lodge, race site, stadium and snow making equipment and we're looking forward to showcasing the facility where we train and compete and top what we did in 2015."

Bidding for 86 of 90 NCAA championships began in August 2019 and more than 3,000 bid applications were submitted. Each sport committee, per division, selected the host sites it believed would provide the ultimate experience for the respective student-athletes, resulting in more than 450 total championship event sites being awarded. More than 54,000 student-athletes compete in NCAA championships each year.

The NCAA sports committees made the nearly 450 selections of host sites based on criteria that included the ability to create an outstanding experience for student-athletes, along with adherence to NCAA sport-specific bid specifications.

Specifications can include, but are not limited to, providing optimal facilities; ease of travel to the location and ample lodging; and adherence to NCAA principles, which include providing an atmosphere that is safe and respects the dignity of all attendees.
