Updated: Mar 23

BY DAVE SHEA

Stopping goals and producing goals and assists have earned OFA goalie Kelson Hooper and Massena forward Nicholas Morrell and Salmon River forward Tim Cook Jr. First Team and Second Team honors in the New York State Hockey Coaches Association All-State selections.

Hooper, who earned the WMSA Award as the Outstanding Goaltender in Division II and was also honored as the Northern Conference Division II MVP, was named to the First Team of the Division II All-State selections.

Hooper logged an NAC high 979 minutes in goal and fashioned an NAC best 1.42 goals against average.

Hooper capped his season by leading the Blue Devils to the Section 10 Division II Championship and rendered an outstanding outing in a 3-1 loss to Webster Thomas in the New York State Quarter-Finals which included an empty net goal.

NORTHERN CONFERENCE ALL-STATE SELECTIONS

Morrell was honored as the NAC Division I Co-MVP with Potsdam goaltender Cole Eakins and earned Second Team All-State honors in Division I. Morrell (16 goals, 35 points) led Massena to the NAC Division I and Section 10 Division I Championships and to a berth in the New York State Division I Final Four which has been postponed by the Corona Virus pandemic.

Massena reached the Final Four with a 5-4 win over Monroe Woodbury in the regional finals.

Salmon River's Tim Cook Jr. (19 goals, 34 points) was a First Team All-NAC Division II selection and was named Second Team All-State. Potsdam's Eakins (2.44 goals against average) earned Honorable Mention in Division I and OFA defenseman Stephen Morley (8 goals, 17 assists) and Norwood-Norfolk forward Bobby Voss (18 goals, 36 points) who earned the North Country Sports.Net Award as the leading scorer in the NAC Division II earned Honorable Mention in Division I.

"Kelson Hooper and Stephen Morley were the backend leaders of our team. Hoop had a dominant year, one of the best for a goalie at OFA. He allowed Stephen and Nolan O'Donnell to play offensively. He could stop shots from everywhere, so it allowed the team to take chances offensively," said OFA Coach Jon Frederick.

"Kelson and Stephen were the leaders when we started 1-3, then after losing to Massena 2 to 1 , never losing until February . A 10-game winning streak. Both Kelson and Stephen are excellent students off the ice. It was tough not to celebrate a great season, but maybe we will get together later this summer one more time."

TRIMBOLI DIVISION I CO-COACH OF YEAR

The Northern Conference was also represented on the All-State Awards by Massena Coach Mike Trimboli who was honored as the Co-Coach of the Year in Division. He shared the award with Mike Ferrari of Victor. The Division II Co-Coaches of the Year are: Pete Thomas of Rye and Clayton Wilson of Star Point.

The Division II Players of the Year are: Tyler Hunt of Grand Island and Tyler Kalota of Starpoint and the Division I Players of the Year are: Jack McCandless of Victor and Chris Olson of Suffern.
