SUNY Canton Skaters Make Professional Mark

CANTON The SUNY Canton men’s hockey program continues to rise on the national landscape after receiving its most votes (16) in the United States College Hockey Online (USCHO) Top 15 Poll this week. Alums and former players of the program also continue to make a name for SUNY Canton hockey in the pros. Currently former SUNY Canton players Joe Deveny, Zach Pease, Kasey Kulczycki, Vili-Jesper Koivula and Brandon McMartin are all playing professional hockey.

“When I started here at Canton, I wanted to make sure that we were preparing our players for life after college hockey,” Head Men’s Hockey Coach Alex Boak said. “For some, that means joining the work force, and for others, that means having the opportunity to play professionally after playing at Canton. My goal is to ensure that no matter what path our players choose, they are prepared to succeed and to represent Canton to the best of their abilities.” Joe Deveny ’19 was called up to the Birmingham Bulls of the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) from the Watertown Wolves of the Federal Prospects Hockey League (FPHL) on Wednesday (1/9). He scored 17 goals and added nine assists in 21 games for the Wolves (1.24/points per game). Deveny led the Roos with 21 points on 10 goals and 11 assists in just 22 games as a senior. After finishing top 20 in the nation in goals per game as a junior, the Stouffville, ON native capped off his career setting a new single-season D-III era record with 35 career goals, breaking the previous mark of 32. For his efforts on the ice and in the classroom, he was named the SUNY Canton Co-Senior Male Student-Athlete of the Year at the end of the 2018-19 academic year. BIRMINGHAM BULLS WEBSITE Zach Pease ’19 is currently a member of the Knoxville Ice Bears of the SPHL where he has appeared in a pair of games this season after moving from the Huntsville Havoc earlier in the year where he appeared in six contests. Pease was called up from the Columbus River Dragons of the FPHL where he totaled seven points on five goals and two assists and +16 on-ice rating. Pease totaled 22 points (five goals, 17 assists) in 73 career games in a Roos uniform.  KNOXVILLE ICE BEARS WEBSITE Deveny joins Kasey Kulczycki ’18, who is already a member of the Bulls and currently sits with four points on a goal and three assists in 24 games this season. Kulczycki finished his Canton career with 34 points on 12 goals and 22 assists in 96 career games. Vili-Jesper Koivula, who spent the 2016-17 and 2017-18 seasons at SUNY Canton, totaled 33 career points (18-15-33) in 31 games. He led the team during his rookie season with 14 goals and 14 assists. Koivula is currently a member of TUTO Hockey in Mestis, the second-highest hockey league in Finland. He has combined for 14 points (six goals, eight assists) with KOOVEE and TUTO hockey during the 2019-20 season. TUTO HOCKEY WEBSITE Brandon McMartin, who played for the Roos during the 2014-15 and 2015-16 seasons combining for 15 points (one goal, 14 assists), is currently a member of the Peoria Rivermen of the SPHL. He has 10 points on a goal and nine assists to go with a +10 on-ice rating. McMartin spent the 2018-19 season with the Knoxville Ice Bears and Fayetteville Marksmen of the SPHL and the Atlanta Gladiators of the Eastern Hockey League (EHL) where he combined for17 points with six goals and 11 assists. PEORIA RIVERMEN WEBSITE “I am proud to say that I was able to coach Joe, Zach, Kasey, Vili and Brandon,” Boak said. “We wish them nothing but the best as they continue to progress through the professional ranks. We will be keeping an eye on their successes and are always looking forward to welcoming our alums back to campus.”
