Talcott, Huiatt Lead Bear Laxmen; Strader Scores In Win
POTSDAM, N.Y.- The SUNY Potsdam men's lacrosse team (2-2, 1-1 SUNYAC) outscored SUNY New Paltz (0-3, 0-2) 10-3 in the second half to cement a 15-8 SUNYAC victory in the teams' first ever meeting. Junior attackman Cam Talcott (Potsdam, N.Y./Potsdam) had personal best six points and senior captain Josh Huiatt (Lisbon, N.Y./Hugh C. Williams) totaled five to move to ninth place on the Bears all-time scoring list. Junior attack Philip Dorman (New Paltz, N.Y./New Paltz) and sophomore attack Nick Zalucky (Wynantskill, N.Y./La Salle Institute) each had two goals and an assist. Sophomore goalie Ben Fuchs (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Calvary Christian Academy) made 10 saves for his fifth career win.
The first half was tightly contested as the teams matched each other's goals. Dorman opened the scoring at 12:35 and Huiatt made it 2-0 five minutes later. The Hawks then responded on goals from sophomore attack Ryan Scully (Bayshore, N.Y./Bayshore) and freshman midfielder Ryan Kaelin (Shoreham, N.Y./Longwood), the second while a man up, to tie the score at 5:40. Just 40 seconds later junior midfielder Henry Reber (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua) set up freshman attackman Cobie Cree (Akwesasne, N.Y./Salmon River) for a 3-2 lead. Scully netted his second at 1:51 and the teams were even after 15 minutes.
After a scoreless first half of the second quarter, Dorman set up sophomore attackman Noah Strader (Ogdensburg, N.Y./Ogdensburg Free Academy) at 5:33. Sophomore attack Thomas Armetta (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) and freshman midfielder Elias Elcock (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) answered with two in-a-row to give New Paltz its only lead of the contest with 55 seconds left. However, junior midfielder Alex Burley (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua) buried a feed from Huiatt with 16 seconds on the clock and the teams headed into the break tied at 5-5.
Potsdam took control with four straight markers in the third quarter. Junior long-stick midfielder Bryley Frederick (Clayton, N.Y./Thousand Islands) assisted on Dorman's man-up goal at 11:53 to start the run. Talcott netted an extra-man goal with a helper from Huiatt at 9:37. Zalucky fed Burley at 6:06 and junior midfielder Alec Miller (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South) set up Talcott at 3:34 and Potsdam was up 9-5. Scully closed the period's scoring with this third at 2:42.
Armetta got the Hawks within 9-7 at 13:07 of the fourth quarter, but Potsdam put the game away with the next six straight. Zalucky scored two in-a-row at 11:29 and 9:43 with the first assisted by Talcott. Talcott scored his third at 6:42 with an assist from Miller. Talcott then fed Huiatt for his second at 2:14. Reber assisted on Talcott's fourth at 1:20 and Cree got his second with another assist from Huiatt with 26 seconds left. New Paltz freshman attack John Reese (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown East) closed the scoring seven seconds later to close out the 15-8 decision.
New Paltz freshman goalie Ryan Steinhart (Hauppauge, N.Y./Smithtown) had 22 saves. Armetta was the high scorer for the Hawks with six points on two goals and four assists.
Huiatt also contributed eight ground balls and two caused turnovers for the Bears. Junior faceoff specialist Brandon Smith (Philadelphia, N.Y./Indian River) was dominant in the circle, winning 17 of his 23 chances and collecting seven ground balls.
The Bears are back in action on Friday, when they host Plattsburgh State at 4 p.m. in another critical SUNYAC battle.
