VanHouse Caps Fine Fall Golf Season At Elmira

HAMILTON, N.Y. -- HAMILTON, N.Y. -- The Elmira College men's golf team shaved nine strokes off its score from the opening round at the Empire 8 Conference Fall Championships with a card of 339 (+51) to secure a fifth-place finish in the first leg of the competition on Sunday afternoon at the Seven Oaks Golf Club.

Elmira posted a two-day score of 687 (+111) to finish just behind Sage in on the team leaderboard. Utica College earned a first-place finish at the two-day affair with a team total of 625 (+49). St. John Fisher College placed second with a score of 632 (+56), while Oswego State grabbed a third-place finish after turning in a team card of 642 (+66).

Junior linksman Matt McGaugh '21matched his score of 82 (+10) from the opening round on Sunday afternoon to finish 14th with a total score of 164 (+20). McGaugh recovered from a rough start to par 10 holes throughout the day. The Hamilton, New York, native was stellar at the four par-fives featured on the 6,915-yard course as he finished second among all golfers with an average score of 4.86 on the four challenging holes.

Jake VanHouse '23 turned in a card of 85 (+13) to grab a 19th-place finish with a two-day total of 169 (+25). The rookie linksman from Ogdensburg secured seven pars and birdied the par-four 16th to earn the top-20 finish. Alex Crysler '21 checked in at 26th on the leaderboard after recording four pars to finish the second round with an 88 (+16), bringing his two-round total to 175 (+31).

Senior Henry Cleveland '20 shaved nine strokes off his score from the opening round with an 84 (+12). Cleveland birdied two holes on Sunday afternoon to finish in 28th with a total score of 179 (+35). Christian Lloyd '20 improved on his opening round with a 90 (+18), totaling 185 (+41) to finish in 30th place. First-year talent Derek Countryman '23 knocked four strokes off his score from the opening round with a 93 (+21), bringing his two-round total to 190 (+46), which was good enough for 31st.
