Wagers, Bruyere Win Elks Soccer Shootout State Titles
BY DAVE SHEA
Emma Wagers and Chad Bruyere are two young Ogdensburg athletes who have dedicated themselves to improve their soccer skills. The dedication was rewarded recently when both completed their Modified Soccer seasons at Ogdensburg Free Academy as Elks Club Soccer Shootout 14-Under Division State Champions.
Soccer is one of the fastest growing youth activities in the country. The Elks Soccer Shoot Program is geared to coincide with this sport phenomenon. This program is the kind of sporting event to help keep our youth focused and away from undesirable activities.
The Elks Club Shootout for the 12-U and 14-U divisions uses a Grid Goal Contest and consists of a full-size goal sectioned off so points can be scored when the ball is kicked into certain sections. The shoot progresses from local contests all the way to a national championship.
The contest is open to both boys and girls and they shoot separately.
Emma Wagewrs and Chad Bruyere both won their state titles on Oct. 13 on OFA's turf field where they plan to play varsity soccer in the coming years.
They both advanced from a local competition hosted by the Ogdensburg Elks Lodge and then advanced through competitions at Lowville and Booneville to advance to the state finals at OFA.
Emma and Chad and the other New York State Champions will now move on to Northeast Region Championships on Friday-Saturday at North Kingstown, Rhode Island. Registration will take place on Friday at the Wild World of Indoor Sports on Friday night and the shootout will be held on Saturday. An awards banquet will take place after the shootout.
